What is swivet?

The swivet Zone is new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education initiative of the International Center for Professional Development (ICPD).  Our goal is to engage and inspire middle and high school students to learn about STEM, get excited about STEM and pursue a career in a STEM related occupation.  The swivet approach to engaging students in STEM includes:

  • swivet web episodes: An entertaining, scripted television quality web series for K-12 students.  It simplifies STEM concepts and makes them exciting using real world scenarios.
  • swivetZone.com website: Cartoon versions of the fictional swivet characters guide STEM subject exploration and keep kids engaged with videos, contests, games, quizzes, trivia and other content.
  • Swivet Zone Educator Workshops: Educators work in teams to review swivet episodes and help to determine how the swivet web series should be used in classrooms and informal education settings.
  • swivet Zone Smart Kits: Educators work in teams to create supplemental STEM education resources to teach the core STEM content standards at the middle school grade level.

  • swivet Zone Red Carpet Events: STEM organizations come together to present hands-on, interactive STEM activities for middle school and high school students and the whole family.  These live entertainment events culminate with a screening of the swivet web series.
  • swivet Zone Video Contest: The swivet characters present a series of tasks and challenge students to pick a task and create a 2-minute video response.  Contest finalists are selected by a panel of judges.  Votes determine the winners.  Students win fun prizes and a chance to be on swivet.
